Report on Internship Program at Green Cargo
2001-08-20
Peep Pobbul, Head of Environmental Division, Estonian Railway Ltd, Estonia
The aim of visiting Green Cargo was to get acquainted with the organization of environmental branch in the firm Green Cargo and to find possibilities for improvement of environmental organization in the enterprise Eesti Raudtee (Railway of Estonia).
My guides in the enterprise Green Cargo were Johan Sandström, to whom I am thankful for the attention they paid to me.
Both firms - Green Cargo and Eesti Raudtee - are railway enterprises involved in transportation of goods. The task of these enterprises is to achieve efficiency of railway transportation by exercising economical activities.
Both enterprises are on their way to big changes - Green Cargo has just become an independent enterprise, but 66% of Eesti Raudtee shares now have their buyer. A common feature for these two enterprises is that passenger transportation is separated from cargo transportation.
From the point of view of work organization it was interesting for me to familiarize with the auxiliary materials related to environmental organization, especially with the variety of information available on the basis of internal network. By cooperation with many consultants and partners, there have been created programs that facilitate environmental organization, unfortunately we still lack such programs. The use of Green Cargo brand Very green, purchase of pure energy (hydroenergy), continuous search for solutions that are not harmful to environment and the significant role of environmental aspects in making new projects was also interesting and should be achieved by us, too.
It was interesting that environmental services are related to the quality system. This approach could be used in the future also by Eesti Raudtee in creation of its structures. This is what I can advise to the new owners. A very pleasant impression was made by the visit to roundhouse, where the level of work culture is considerably higher than in Estonia. It was also significant that the mentioned roundhouse was comparatively new, but our roundhouse buildings are more than 50 years old.
For me it was very useful to meet environmental specialists of the Environmental Protection Agency of Sweden, where the transportation specialists introduced me with their work and I acquired information on the noise of transport I was interested in.
As a pleasant and successful I consider the fact, that there has developed a good touch with the colleagues from Green Cargo, to whom I can now always address and receive answers to the questions of my interest.
I consider this meeting as a very successful, and I would like to thank its organizers for the opportunity to present there.
Sincerely yours,
Peep Pobbul
